The end of each stage provides choices of power-ups, like Nuclear Throne if you've played it, and stores can be occasionally found to increase health or ammo. Some enemies can't be shot, and others will damage you if you try to jump on them. The only buttons are left, right and shoot, and you can damage enemies by shooting them, or by jumping on their heads. From what I have experienced, the core mechanics are excellent and receptive. Basically, there's a themed area broken down into three parts: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3. I only have played for a few hours, and I haven't beaten the second "world", or whatever the term is used on Downwell. Being a cheap game, as well as one that interested me, as I am a fan of roguelike progression games, I picked it up. I discovered Downwell as a Let's Play video done by Northernlion. I purchased Downwell on Steam, as I have an Android phone, and as far as I know, it isn't on the Google Play store yet. I hope we see more games from Moppin in the near future! Given its low price, it's easily one of the essential games of 2015. Despite being randomly generated, the game has four levels with unique themes, enemies, and mechanics, and a final boss that, as all "rogue-lite" bosses should, tests the average between your skill and how well you managed your resources. The risk, of course, is that those rewards are a lot less useful if you took damage during that combo, because health is the hardest resource to earn. Your gunboots only reload with ammo when you land or stomp an enemy, and if you stomp a series of enemies without landing, you trigger a combo that will reward you with money, an ammo upgrade, and a health upgrade if you keep the combo going long enough. What the title doesn’t tell you is your weapon: gunboots, which can only fire downwards and are equally important for slowing your descent. Obviously inspired by Vlambeer's Super Crate Box, Ridiculous Fishing, and Luftrausers, but what makes it special is that it’s tightened to a razor’s edge with a characteristically Japanese sense of arcade design.įor the uninitiated: Downwell is a game about… falling down a well. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creeschĪ personal favorite of mine./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
